Why Protecting Ears in Winter Is Essential for Your Health

New Delhi, 29 December. As winter arrives, people bring out thick jackets and warm clothes, but many avoid covering their heads, risking their HEALTH.

Wearing a cap or covering the head is often seen by today’s youth as unfashionable, leading them to leave their ears and face exposed. This makes it difficult to maintain the body’s temperature. Both medical science and Ayurveda agree that cold affecting the ears has a strong impact on the body.

The ears are one of the most sensitive parts of the body, and exposure to cold air can cause illness, affecting the brain and heart systems. This is because ears lack muscles or fat tissue to protect them. Beneath the ear’s skin lies a network of nerves, and when cold air hits this area, it disturbs the body’s overall temperature, causing various health problems.

The ears have a direct connection to the brain. Cold air on the ears can affect brain nerves, leading to headaches. The nerves become irritated, and in severe cases, dizziness and fainting can occur. Behind the ear’s skin lies the facial nerve, which controls blood flow to the face. Sudden exposure to cold air can cause inflammation of this nerve, potentially leading to temporary facial paralysis, where the face or jaw may become stiff.

According to Ayurveda, the ears are linked to the body’s Vata dosha and digestion. Cold exposure to the ears can cause digestive issues such as gas, cramps, and indigestion.

People with blood pressure problems should especially protect their ears, as cold exposure causes blood vessels to constrict and increases pressure on the circulatory system, worsening both low and high blood pressure conditions.

During winter, always keep your ears covered and gently massage the skin behind the ears at night with warm oil. This helps stabilize the nervous system.
