New Delhi, May 9: The World Health Organization (WHO) has reassured the global community that there is no need to panic over the hantavirus, emphasizing that it is not akin to a second COVID-19 pandemic.
WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus addressed concerns on social media, stating, “I understand that you are worried.” He acknowledged the lingering pain from the COVID-19 pandemic but urged people to trust that hantavirus does not pose a significant public health threat at this time. “My colleagues and I have made this clear, and I will reiterate it,” he added.
The hantavirus strain found on the MV Hondius ship has resulted in eight confirmed cases, with three fatalities. Dr. Ghebreyesus expressed condolences to the families of the deceased, noting that there have been no new cases reported on the ship, which is currently under medical supervision.
Spanish authorities have implemented a cautious, step-by-step plan to safely disembark passengers at the industrial port of Granadilla, away from residential areas, and return them directly to their home countries.
Dr. Ghebreyesus thanked Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez for his decision to anchor the ship in Spain, calling it an example of solidarity and moral duty. He clarified that the request from WHO to Spain was made in accordance with international health regulations.
Approximately 150 people from 23 countries have been at sea for weeks, many feeling distressed and eager to return home. Tenerife was chosen for its medical capacity, infrastructure, and humanity to ensure the safety of those aboard.
The ship’s captain, Jan Dobrogowski, along with the crew and cruise company, has shown positivity and support during this challenging time. Dr. Ghebreyesus expressed gratitude on behalf of WHO and the passengers’ families to the people of Tenerife and all involved.
