Kolkata, May 6, 2026 (Udaipur Kiran): Tension escalated in parts of Kolkata following the announcement of assembly election results, with reports of violence and vandalism surfacing from multiple areas. A Trinamool Congress (TMC) office in the New Market area was allegedly demolished using a bulldozer, triggering a sharp political reaction.

According to reports, a group targeted the local Trinamool Congress office near New Market Union and brought down the structure. The incident led to panic among shopkeepers near the historic Hogg Market, with many shutting their shops and leaving the area amid chaos.
The TMC strongly condemned the incident, calling it “hooliganism” and alleging that supporters of the Bharatiya Janata Party were behind the attack. In an official statement, the party claimed that local दुकानदारों and its office were targeted, and alleged that central security forces were instructed to remain passive during the incident.
Senior TMC leaders also criticised the developments. MP Mahua Moitra shared a video of the incident on social media, taking a swipe at the BJP’s “parivartan” slogan. Another senior leader Derek O’Brien alleged that the demolition took place in the presence of police and central forces, accusing authorities of inaction.
However, some local residents claimed that the demolished structure was built illegally and had earlier been taken over from a shopkeeper before being converted into a union office.
Security has been tightened in and around the New Market area to prevent further escalation. Meanwhile, incidents of post-poll violence have also been reported from other parts of West Bengal, where clashes between BJP and TMC workers led to the death of one worker from each party.
Police said that in New Town, a BJP worker identified as Madhu Mondal died after an alleged assault during a victory procession. In a separate incident in Birbhum’s Nanoor, a TMC worker, Abir Sheikh, was reportedly killed in an attack involving sharp weapons. Central forces have been deployed in affected areas to restore normalcy.
