Vakrasana Improves Digestion, Strengthens Spine; Caution Advised

New Delhi, December 2 (Udaipur Kiran): In today’s busy and fast-paced lifestyle, many people are affected by both mental and physical health problems. Yoga offers a natural solution to these issues, and by making it a part of daily routine, one can stay healthy. Vakrasana is one such simple yet highly effective yoga posture.

Vakrasana

According to the Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga, Vakrasana is considered very beneficial for improving flexibility of the waist and spine. Along with strengthening the muscles, it also helps in improving the digestive system.

As per the Yoga Institute, to perform Vakrasana, one should first sit on the ground with legs stretched straight. Bend the right leg at the knee and place it outside the left thigh. Take the left hand over the right knee and hold the toes of the right foot, then twist the body to the right and look in that direction. The same process should be repeated on the other side. Breathing should remain normal during the posture, and one should hold the position for 25 to 30 seconds.

Regular practice of Vakrasana offers several health benefits. It increases flexibility of the spine and helps relieve pain in the waist and shoulders. It strengthens the digestive system, reduces constipation, and helps in problems related to gas and acidity. It also activates the liver and kidneys, aiding in detoxification. Apart from physical benefits, Vakrasana is also helpful for mental health as it reduces stress and anxiety.

While Vakrasana is highly beneficial, it can cause harm if done incorrectly or under unsuitable conditions. Therefore, it should always be practiced under the guidance of a trained yoga instructor. People suffering from severe back pain, slip disc, or any spinal disorder or injury should avoid this posture.

Women should also be cautious during menstruation, and those who have undergone abdominal surgery should avoid it. Patients with high blood pressure and cervical spondylitis are also advised to practice Vakrasana only with proper medical and expert guidance.
