US Visa Renewal Policy Updated: Interview Waiver Now Limited to 12 Months

Travellers Urged to Act Fast as Visa Interview Appointments Face Delays

February 25, 2025: The US Department of State has revised its visa renewal policy, significantly reducing the eligibility period for interview waivers from 48 months to just 12 months. Effective February 18, 2025, only applicants whose B1 or B2 visa has expired within the past year may qualify for a waiver.

This change means that travellers whose US visas expired more than a year ago must now go through the standard application process, including an in-person interview, which is currently facing significant delays in appointment availability.

Key Changes in US Visa Renewal Policy

Interview Waiver Eligibility Reduced: The previous 48-month grace period for renewals has been cut to 12 months.
Regular Application Required for Expired Visas: Travellers whose visas expired more than a year ago must apply as new applicants.
Renewal Must Be in Home Country: Applications must be filed in the applicant’s home country or country of residence.
No Previous Visa Refusals: Applicants must have no prior visa denials (unless waived) and no apparent ineligibilities.
Diplomatic & Official Visa Holders Exempt: Certain categories remain unaffected by this change.

According to Section 222(h) of the Immigration and Nationality Act, consular officers still have the authority to waive in-person interviews for specific applicants but may require interviews on a case-by-case basis.

Travel Experts Urge Applicants to Renew Visas Promptly

Industry experts warn that the new policy requires swift action from travellers.

📌 Subair Thekepurathvalappil, senior manager at Wisefox Tourism, explained that the post-Covid renewal process allowed applicants to renew visas by mail, giving them four years to apply. With the policy now reverting to pre-pandemic procedures, many applicants must attend interviews, adding to processing delays.

📌 Libin Varghese, sales director at Rooh Tourism and Travel, emphasized that many travellers have been slow to renew their visas, assuming they had four years. He now urges applicants to apply as early as possible to avoid further complications.

“For those whose visas are set to expire soon, even with a few months left, it is advisable to apply now. Any visa that expired before February 18 will not be considered for an interview waiver,” said Varghese.

Significant Delays in Visa Interview Appointments

💼 The updated policy comes amid increasing wait times for visa interviews.

📌 In Abu Dhabi, for instance, the earliest available appointment for a visa interview is in July 2026, underscoring the importance of applying well in advance.
📌 Applicants are advised to regularly check the US embassy and consulate websites for up-to-date visa appointment availability and application requirements.

Final Advisory: Apply Early, Avoid Delays

The new US visa renewal policy is a crucial update for travellers, business professionals, and tourists planning trips to the US. With interview waivers now restricted to a one-year window, travellers are strongly encouraged to:

Check their visa expiry date and apply early for renewal
Monitor appointment availability and plan accordingly
Ensure eligibility under the new waiver criteria
