Washington, November 8 (Udaipur Kiran) — The US Supreme Court on Friday night granted temporary relief to former President Donald Trump’s administration by allowing it to make temporary cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) during the ongoing government shutdown crisis.
Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson issued the order, temporarily blocking a lower court’s directive that had required the administration to release the full amount of SNAP funds. The lower court had earlier ruled in favor of maintaining full allocations under the program, which supports millions of low-income Americans.
According to The New York Times, Justice Jackson did not rule on the legality of the White House’s actions but instead suspended the lower court’s decision to give the appeals court additional time to review the government’s arguments. The administration had requested permission to reduce SNAP funding temporarily during the shutdown.
The ruling came as several states — including New York, Kansas, Pennsylvania, and Oregon — had already started distributing full SNAP benefits to residents. The US Department of Agriculture had also recently indicated that funds for the program might soon be released.
Justice Jackson stated in her order that she expects the appeals court to review the matter promptly and deliver a comprehensive judgment soon.
The Supreme Court’s intervention has deepened uncertainty for nearly 42 million Americans who depend on SNAP benefits. The 38-day-long government shutdown has affected communities across the nation, disrupting essential services and assistance programs.
