U.S. Chief Justice John Roberts Hits Back at Trump Over Judiciary Criticism

Washington, March 19 – U.S. Chief Justice John Roberts issued a rare rebuke on Tuesday in response to former President Donald Trump’s escalating attacks on the federal judiciary. Roberts strongly countered Trump’s recent calls for the impeachment of judges who ruled against him, emphasizing that judicial decisions should not be met with impeachment threats.

In a statement released by the Supreme Court, Roberts asserted, “For over two centuries, it has been firmly established that impeachment is not an appropriate response to disagreements over judicial rulings. The appeals process exists to address such concerns.” Though he did not directly name Trump, the statement came in the wake of the former president’s repeated verbal assaults on federal judges, particularly U.S. District Judge James Boasberg.

Boasberg recently placed a temporary hold on the deportation of suspected Venezuelan gang members, a ruling that prompted Trump to demand his impeachment. The former president took to his social media platform, Truth Social, calling Boasberg a “radical left lunatic judge” and labeling him a “disgraceful Obama appointee” who should be “impeached immediately.”

Trump’s allies, including billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk, have echoed his call for judicial impeachments. Meanwhile, Republican lawmakers have taken steps to act on such demands. Texas Representative Brandon Gill announced on social media that he had initiated an impeachment process against Boasberg, reinforcing the growing tension between Trump loyalists and the judiciary.

Trump has long targeted judges who rule against him, frequently questioning their integrity and accusing them of political bias. However, Roberts’ sharp response underscores the judiciary’s firm stance on upholding judicial independence in the face of political pressure.

As Trump remains a dominant figure in the Republican Party ahead of the 2024 elections, his attacks on the judiciary continue to raise concerns about the politicization of America’s legal system.
