Philadelphia, February 11: Villanova’s Tyler Perkins emerged as the hero in a thrilling matchup against Marquette, helping his team secure a 77-74 victory at the Finneran Pavilion. The Wildcats found themselves trailing by nine points in the second half, but Perkins’ late-game performance turned the tide.
With just five minutes remaining, Perkins hit consecutive three-pointers, narrowing the gap to three points. After Marquette’s Ben Gold extended their lead, Perkins responded again with another three-pointer, followed by a crucial rebound that set up Acaden Lewis for a layup, giving Villanova a 73-72 lead with 1:39 left on the clock.
Defensively, Perkins made a key steal and converted two free throws, sealing his impactful performance. He finished the game with 22 points, eight rebounds, and a critical block on Adrien Stevens’ final shot attempt.
Villanova, now 19-5 overall and 10-3 in the conference, started strong, building a double-digit lead in the first half. However, Marquette fought back, taking their first lead early in the second half. Despite struggling at the free-throw line throughout the season, Villanova made their last six attempts to secure the win.
Lewis contributed 15 points and five assists, while Matt Hodge added 13 points. The Wildcats have now won four consecutive games and will face Creighton next. With their NCAA Tournament hopes looking bright, Perkins’ performance was vital in avoiding a potentially damaging loss at home.
