New Delhi, March 15: As the captain who led India to victory in the T20 World Cup 2026, Surya Kumar Yadav shared insights on the team’s strategy, highlighting the importance of minimal changes in player selection. During a panel discussion at the BCCI Awards ceremony, he explained that the foundation of their recent success was built on a well-thought-out approach and unwavering trust in a core group of players.
Yadav stated, “It wasn’t that difficult. Since 2024, under Rahul sir’s leadership, we understood the need to show a lot of faith in our players. Sometimes, in sports, things don’t always look good around you. There are many ups and downs, but you need to have immense trust in your players. As we began the new cycle for the T20 World Cup 2026, we aimed to make as few changes as possible.”
He further emphasized the importance of standing by players who had performed well over the past two years, saying, “When you enter such a big tournament, it is crucial to support those who have delivered for you. We always knew we had created a super team. As Gautam bhai always says, we have chosen a super team, so let’s stick with them.”
During the T20 World Cup 2026, after a challenging batting performance against the USA, Yadav played a pivotal innings, scoring 84 runs to rescue the team from a precarious situation. He acknowledged the pressure of playing in front of home crowds, stating, “You are right that we were the biggest contenders for the title. However, knowing you are playing in your own country, in front of your home fans, brings excitement but also immense pressure. We were quite nervous, as seen in our first match against the USA.”
Reflecting on the fast-paced nature of T20 cricket, Yadav remarked, “10-15 minutes can be a long time. The change you are talking about can happen in just one over. We tried our best to play our best cricket and keep things as simple as possible. I believe the boys did just that for me.”
With cricket set to be included in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, Yadav expressed his ambition to add an Olympic gold to his growing collection of ICC trophies. He said, “It’s great that a major event is happening and cricket is getting entry. Of course, it would be special. That year, there are two events: the T20 World Cup and the Olympics. So why not? If we have won two in a row, why not three in T20, and definitely aim for the Olympic gold as well?”
