New Delhi, March 15: Indian cricket team captain Shubman Gill has been honored with the Polly Umrigar Award by the BCCI. He was named the Best Men’s International Cricketer for the 2024-25 season at the BCCI Naman Awards. Gill’s performance in 2025 was exceptional, showcasing his skills with the bat.
In 2025, Gill played 9 Test matches, scoring 983 runs at an impressive average of 70 across 16 innings. He achieved five centuries and one half-century in the longest format of the game. During a five-match Test series in England, Gill amassed 754 runs, becoming the highest run-scorer for India in a Test series on English soil. His remarkable feat included four centuries and one double century.
Gill also excelled in One Day Internationals (ODIs), scoring 490 runs at an average of 49 in 11 matches, which included two centuries and two half-centuries. Under his captaincy, the Indian team clinched the Champions Trophy title after 12 years, defeating New Zealand in the final. In this tournament, Gill scored 188 runs at an average of 47 over five matches.
However, Gill’s performance in the T20 format was disappointing, leading to his exclusion from the Indian team for the T20 World Cup 2026. In 2025, he played 15 T20 matches, scoring only 291 runs at an average of 24, without any centuries or half-centuries. As both a captain and a batsman, Gill’s focus now shifts to the ODI World Cup scheduled for 2027.
