New Delhi/Udaipur, July 22 — The release of the controversial film ‘Udaipur Files’, reportedly based on the Kanhaiya Lal murder case, continues to face legal hurdles. On Monday, the Supreme Court extended the stay on the film’s release by four more days, setting the next hearing for July 24.
The court also directed the filmmakers to incorporate six specific modifications recommended by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting before further proceedings.
Bench Reviews Arguments from All Parties
A two-judge bench comprising Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi heard the case. During the proceedings, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing on behalf of the Central Government, stated that the six modifications suggested were sufficient and no further changes were required if those were implemented.
Representing the filmmakers, Jani Firefox Media, it was argued that ‘Udaipur Files’ is a fictional narrative and had already undergone significant scrutiny. The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) had granted clearance to the film after recommending 55 cuts, which were duly implemented.
Petitioners Raise Concerns Over Communal Sensitivity
Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for Maulana Arshad Madani—one of the petitioners—argued that the film directly targets the Muslim community and has the potential to incite communal disharmony. The petitioners claim that the film may disturb public peace and communal harmony, justifying the need for its restraint.
Background of the Legal Dispute
The controversy stems from a petition filed in the Delhi High Court by Maulana Arshad Madani and three others, seeking a ban on the film’s release. On July 10, the Delhi High Court ordered a stay on the film’s release. In response, the producers challenged the order in the Supreme Court on July 14, which admitted the plea and has since been reviewing the matter.
With the next hearing now scheduled for July 24, the fate of ‘Udaipur Files’ hangs in balance, awaiting a final decision from the apex court.
