Mumbai, August 2: Sunil Grover has become a household name in Indian comedy, known for his memorable characters like Gutthi and Dr. Mashoor Gulati. His journey, however, has not been without challenges. After being replaced from a show just three days into shooting, Grover faced a period of self-doubt. Yet, his determination and hard work led him to carve a niche for himself in the industry.
Born on August 3, 1977, in Mandi Dabwali, Haryana, Grover showed an early interest in acting and mimicry. His talent was recognized during school plays, where he impressed the chief guest with his unique skills. He later pursued a Master’s degree in Theatre from Punjab University, Chandigarh, where he caught the attention of renowned comedian Jaspal Bhatti, who offered him his first television opportunity in 1995.
Despite his aspirations, Grover’s initial days in Mumbai were tough, filled with rejections and low earnings. He recalled earning merely ₹500 a month at the start, relying on savings and family support to pursue his dreams. A significant setback came when he was unexpectedly replaced after three days of shooting for a show, which left him disheartened and questioning his abilities. However, he persevered and gradually began to work in television, radio, and films.
Grover’s film debut was in 1998 with Ajay Devgn’s “Pyaar To Hona Hi Tha,” followed by notable roles in films like “The Legend of Bhagat Singh,” “Ghajini,” and “Jawan.” Although often cast in supporting roles, he made each character memorable. His breakthrough came in 2013 with “Comedy Nights with Kapil,” where his character Gutthi gained immense popularity, overshadowing his real name.
In 2017, a fallout with Kapil Sharma led Grover to leave the show, but they later reunited for “The Great Indian Kapil Show” in 2024. Beyond comedy, Grover has also showcased his versatility in serious roles in web series like “Tandav” and “Sunflower.”
His contributions to comedy have earned him several awards, including a Special Mention Comic Icon award at the ITA Awards in 2018.
