Chandigarh, July 16: Sukhbir Singh Badal, the president of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), has launched a sharp attack on the Punjab government and Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann regarding police action against employees and workers in Khanna. He accused the government of using force against peaceful protesters, which he claims is against democratic values.
In a post on the social media platform ‘X’, Badal criticized Chief Minister Mann, alleging that police employed batons, water cannons, and tear gas against employees and workers who were peacefully chanting ‘Satnam Waheguru’.
He stated that the protesters were contract workers and poor laborers demanding their pending wages. This incident occurred when the demonstrators gathered outside the residence of Cabinet Minister Tarunpreet Singh Sondh in Khanna to voice their demands.
Badal emphasized that in a democratic system, people have the right to express their views and protest peacefully. He accused the government of resorting to force instead of listening to the public’s voice, labeling the action as ‘danda-tantra’ rather than democracy.
He further stated that no government should attempt to suppress the people’s voice forcefully. Badal criticized the Punjab government for adopting a repressive attitude instead of addressing the issues faced by employees and workers.
The Shiromani Akali Dal has declared its support for the employees and workers, with Badal assuring them that if the SAD comes to power in 2027, their pending demands will be prioritized and addressed.
