Iran’s Navy Attacks Tanker with Limpet Mines in Strait of Hormuz
Iran's navy claimed responsibility for damaging a tanker in the Strait of Hormuz, indicating a shift in tactics following escalating tensions in the region.

Iran’s navy reported it struck a tanker with limpet mines in the Strait of Hormuz around 7:30 p.m. local time on Thursday. The incident may signal a tactical shift in ongoing maritime tensions, as the vessel was allegedly in a restricted area.
Iranian state media stated the tanker was damaged and caught fire but did not specify its name or origin. The U.K. Marine Trade Operations Centre confirmed the attack, noting that no crew injuries or environmental impacts were reported. The tanker was reportedly exiting the strait via a southern route recommended by the U.S. for commercial shipping.
The Iranian navy emphasized that the Strait of Hormuz remains closed to ships it deems to be violating maritime regulations. They warned vessels relying on uncoordinated transits through these waters could face severe risks, stating, “These uncoordinated transits… have exposed and will continue to expose vessels and their crews to serious dangers.”
Prior to this incident, Iran had claimed responsibility for multiple attacks on ships in the region. Following these occurrences, the U.S. urged maritime traffic to avoid northern routes controlled by Iran, stressing safe passage in high-risk areas.
The geopolitical situation remains tense, with Iran insisting that any ceasefire negotiations must include lifting the U.S. blockade on Iranian ports and granting access to frozen assets. Iran has not yet responded to recent communications aimed at reviving dialogue.
