March 28, 2025 – Kolkata | Weather Desk
South Bengal is on high alert for extreme heat in the coming days, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicting temperatures to soar to 40°C around Eid. Several districts in West Bengal’s western region are expected to experience ‘hot day’ conditions, posing health and comfort challenges for residents.

Why Is South Bengal Heating Up?
According to the Alipore Meteorological Centre, two key weather systems are influencing this heat surge:
A trough line stretching from Maharashtra to Kerala
An active Western Disturbance near Jammu & Kashmir and Pakistan
These systems are disrupting usual weather patterns, causing a sudden rise in temperatures across South Bengal. From Friday onward, early mornings may feel pleasant, but afternoons will bring intense heat, with temperatures climbing beyond 36–37°C, and potentially reaching 40°C by the time of Eid.
Forecast Highlights
Kolkata: On Thursday, the city recorded a maximum temperature of 35.1°C and a minimum of 26°C. Humidity levels fluctuated between 29% and 91%, making the heat feel more oppressive. No rain is forecast in the next few days.
South Bengal Districts: Heatwave-like conditions are expected, especially in districts like Bankura, Purulia, Birbhum, Paschim Bardhaman, and parts of East and West Midnapore.
North Bengal: In contrast, Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Kalimpong, and Alipurduar may witness rain with thunder on Friday and Saturday. The rainy spell may taper off by Sunday, but the cool, moist conditions are expected to continue till Monday.
What to Expect This Eid
Residents of South Bengal should prepare for scorching heat during Eid festivities. With no rain in the forecast and humidity expected to remain high, precautions are advised:
Avoid direct sun exposure in the afternoon
Stay hydrated and wear light clothing
Use sun protection when outdoors
Pay special attention to vulnerable groups like children and the elderly
