Patna, May 2: Heavy rainfall on Saturday has exposed serious flaws in the drainage system of Gopalganj, leading to chaos in the city. While the rain provided temporary relief from the scorching heat, it also caused extensive waterlogging that severely affected daily life.
Major roads in the city are submerged, making transportation extremely difficult for residents. In many areas, the water has accumulated to such an extent that walking has become a challenge.
The situation is particularly alarming at the largest health facility in the district, the Sadar Hospital in Gopalganj, where the premises are flooded with knee-deep water. Access routes to the emergency ward are submerged, making it extremely difficult for stretchers and wheelchairs to navigate, forcing patients and their companions to wade through dirty, stagnant water.
The waterlogging has not only disrupted transportation but has also raised serious concerns about hygiene and the potential spread of infectious diseases within the hospital.
Several low-lying areas, streets, and residential neighborhoods across the city are inundated. Overflowing drains are mixing with rainwater, spreading foul, contaminated water onto the roads. Residents are being forced to navigate through filthy conditions, causing significant inconvenience, especially for school children, women, and the elderly.
Local residents have raised serious questions about the effectiveness of the drainage cleaning campaigns conducted before the monsoon. Officials claim to spend millions of rupees each year on thorough cleaning of the drains; however, the current situation suggests otherwise.
Just a few hours of rainfall were enough to paralyze the city, highlighting the inefficiency of the drainage system and the clear imbalance between expenditure and results. The stagnant water has also increased the risk of waterborne diseases, further heightening public concern.
Residents fear that if such a situation arises after a light rainfall, conditions could worsen during the peak monsoon season. This incident serves as a stark warning for the administration to take immediate corrective measures.
