WASHINGTON, April 1, 2025 — Nearly 2,000 leading scientists, doctors, and researchers have issued a stark warning about what they call a “wholesale assault on U.S. science” by the Trump administration, in an open letter that underscores growing alarm over federal research cuts that they say threaten public health, innovation, and national security.

The letter, signed by numerous members of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, comes in response to sweeping federal actions that include the elimination of tens of thousands of jobs at the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the dismantling of billions in research grants across fields like climate science, cancer research, and infectious diseases.
“We’re Sending an SOS” — A Warning from the Scientific Community
Dr. Steven Woolf, a professor at Virginia Commonwealth University and one of the letter’s authors, appeared on PBS to discuss the implications. “We are sending this SOS to sound a clear warning: The nation’s scientific enterprise is being decimated,” Woolf said.
He explained that while the United States spent decades building a globally respected scientific infrastructure, the administration’s aggressive policies are undermining that foundation within weeks.
“These cuts are going to slow the discovery of new treatments for cancer and heart disease, and they’ll make us fall behind nations like China that are increasing their investment in research,” Woolf warned.
Real-World Impact: From Cancer Cures to National Competitiveness
Critics say the administration’s actions are more than symbolic. Universities and research institutions are already seeing reduced grant flows from agencies like the NIH and NSF, slowing or halting projects that drive medical breakthroughs, climate resilience, and technology development.
“The net effect is fewer discoveries, slower innovation, and long-term damage to America’s global leadership in science,” Woolf said.
He also raised concerns about the administration replacing career scientists and top experts with ideologically aligned figures, which, he argues, compromises scientific integrity and public trust.
A Chilling Effect on Institutions Under Political Pressure
The letter comes as the Trump administration has increased scrutiny — and threatened funding — for major research universities, including Harvard, Columbia, and the University of Pennsylvania, citing ideological concerns ranging from campus antisemitism to political bias.
“There is a climate of fear,” Woolf said, referring to why many universities have remained cautious or silent. “We’re speaking out as individuals because many institutional leaders feel they can’t, due to financial and legal pressure.”
Conflicting Messages from HHS Leadership
Interestingly, some of the administration’s stated goals — such as addressing chronic disease, ultra-processed foods, and low U.S. life expectancy — have been praised by scientists. Woolf noted that Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has raised valid concerns.
However, he said, the administration’s approach is contradictory: “While the diagnosis is correct, the treatment is bizarre,” Woolf said. “They’re dismantling the very research base we need to fix the problems they’re highlighting.”
What’s at Stake
The scientists behind the open letter argue that this isn’t just a debate about funding — it’s about the future of American health, economic competitiveness, and evidence-based policy. Without urgent action, they warn, the U.S. could cede its scientific leadership and compromise its own people’s wellbeing.
