Chennai, October 23 (Udaipur Kiran News): Following continuous rainfall in Chennai, the administration has stepped up relief and rehabilitation operations under the directions of Chief Minister M.K. Stalin. Teams of the Greater Chennai Corporation are working round the clock to prevent waterlogging in low-lying areas and to ensure smooth traffic movement across the city.
Officials confirmed that water has been completely drained from 22 subway tunnels, restoring vehicle movement. A total of 1,436 motor pumps have been deployed to remove stagnant water from vulnerable areas. Additionally, equipment from nearby districts has been brought in to support the relief efforts, including 299 dredging machines, 73 sewer suction vehicles, and 298 jetting vehicles, all kept on standby for emergency use.
To support rain-affected residents, the administration has arranged extensive food distribution. In the past 24 hours alone, around 3,97,900 people were provided with meals. On October 22, breakfast for 1,48,450 people was prepared at 68 community kitchens, lunch for 2,20,950 people at 76 kitchens, and dinner for 27,000 people at 15 kitchens.
In addition to these kitchens, continuous food and drinking water supply is being ensured at multiple relief camps across the city. The Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board has maintained uninterrupted water supply during the rains, delivering water through 454 tankers. Moreover, 106 community kitchens and 215 flood relief centres are also receiving regular water supplies.
Out of the 1,436 pumps deployed for water drainage, 150 pumps have a capacity of 100 horsepower, while 500 tractor-mounted pumps are positioned in low-lying areas to speed up the process. Between October 17 and 22, strong winds and heavy rains caused 24 trees to fall, which were promptly cleared by corporation teams.
For public convenience, helpline numbers have been activated — 1913 for Chennai Corporation-related issues and 1916 for water supply complaints. The government has urged citizens to avoid rumours, follow official instructions, and report any problems immediately so that prompt assistance can be provided.
