Jaipur, January 23: (Udaipur Kiran). Weather conditions across North India changed sharply as an active western disturbance triggered rain and snowfall in several regions. Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi witnessed rainfall since late night, accompanied by strong winds, leading to a drop in temperatures in many districts.

In the Himalayan states, a fresh spell of rain and snowfall has begun. Himachal Pradesh’s Shimla and Manali recorded the season’s first snowfall, ending a dry spell that had lasted for nearly three and a half months.
In Jammu and Kashmir, snowfall continues in Gulmarg and surrounding areas. Due to snowfall in Srinagar on Friday, flight operations at the airport were temporarily suspended, resulting in multiple cancellations. The Srinagar–Jammu National Highway has been closed, with traffic halted near the Navyug Tunnel. Mughal Road, Sinthan Pass and SSG Road have also been shut due to snow accumulation.
The Vaishno Devi pilgrimage has been suspended as a precautionary measure, while schools in several hilly districts have been closed owing to adverse weather conditions.
According to the Meteorological Department, another strong western disturbance is likely to become active around January 26. This system may bring rainfall to nine northern states and snowfall in the hilly regions.
A western disturbance is a weather system of winds and clouds originating from the west. When active, it causes snowfall in mountainous areas and rain in the plains, leading to a fall in temperatures and increasing the possibility of frost and cold wave conditions.
