BJP MPs Submit Notice for Breach of Privilege in Parliament
New Delhi, February 3 – A group of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Members of Parliament (MPs) have submitted a breach of privilege notice against Congress Parliamentary Party leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sonia Gandhi over her recent remarks regarding President Droupadi Murmu. Similarly, BJP MPs have also filed a privilege motion against Independent MP Pappu Yadav for his allegedly derogatory comments about the President.
At least 40 BJP MPs met Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar to formally submit the notice against Sonia Gandhi. In their submission, the MPs stated:
“We write with great disappointment regarding certain unparliamentary and disrespectful remarks recently made by Sonia Gandhi against the Hon’ble President of India. Such comments undermine the dignity of the highest constitutional office and warrant serious disciplinary action.”
Controversial Remarks and Political Reactions
The controversy erupted following Sonia Gandhi’s remarks on January 31, after President Droupadi Murmu’s address to Parliament. She was quoted as saying that the President was “poor woman, exhausted by the end of her speech and struggling to speak.”
This comment sparked a major political uproar, with the Rashtrapati Bhavan issuing a statement condemning it as “unfortunate, unacceptable, and in poor taste.” The Prime Minister Narendra Modi and several senior BJP leaders also strongly criticized Sonia Gandhi, demanding an apology for her remarks.
Additionally, Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Kiren Rijiju demanded that Gandhi issue a formal apology, emphasizing that the statement was demeaning to the dignity of the President’s office.
Privilege Motion Against Pappu Yadav
In a parallel development, BJP MPs have submitted a privilege motion against Independent MP Pappu Yadav for his controversial remarks about the President’s role. Yadav, a Lok Sabha MP from Purnia, allegedly referred to the President as a mere “stamp” and dismissed her speech as a ‘love letter’.
BJP MPs objected strongly to these comments, stating in their privilege motion that:
“Such derogatory language aims to undermine the dignity of the highest constitutional position in India. These remarks constitute a serious breach of parliamentary privilege, ethics, and decorum.”
Union Minister Kiren Rijiju further reiterated that the tribal MPs of BJP have taken this matter very seriously. He stated:
“Our tribal MPs have formally submitted their objections before both the Lok Sabha Speaker and the Rajya Sabha Chairman. They have protested against the remarks made by Pappu Yadav, who called the President’s address a ‘love letter.’ Similarly, they have strongly objected to Sonia Gandhi’s characterization of the President as a ‘poor, exhausted woman’.”
“The Rajya Sabha Chairman took note of these concerns very seriously and assured the MPs that appropriate action would be considered,” Rijiju added.
Parliamentary Action and Possible Consequences
The privilege motion filed against Sonia Gandhi and Pappu Yadav could lead to:
✔ A formal review by the Privileges Committee of Parliament.
✔ Disciplinary action, including censure or reprimand by the House.
✔ A directive for a formal apology, if deemed necessary.
The Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha Speakers are expected to examine the notice and determine further proceedings based on parliamentary rules.
