Premature Newborn Saved After Rare Surgery at PIMS Udaipur

Udaipur, April 7, (Udaipur Kiran): Doctors at Pacific Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), Umarda, have successfully performed a rare and complex surgery on a premature newborn weighing just 1.8 kg, giving the infant a new lease of life.

The baby, born to a family from Jagat (Udaipur) at the same hospital, was diagnosed immediately after birth with a serious congenital condition where the food pipe (oesophagus) was not fully developed and was abnormally connected to the windpipe. This rare condition is medically known as Tracheoesophageal Fistula and occurs in approximately one out of every 3,000 to 4,000 newborns.

Three-Hour Complex Surgery

Paediatric surgeon Dr. Atul Mishra said the low birth weight and premature delivery made the surgery extremely challenging. Despite this, the team successfully conducted a delicate operation lasting nearly three hours, separating the food pipe from the windpipe and reconnecting it properly.

The baby has now fully recovered and has been discharged from the hospital. Dr. Mishra noted that while such procedures are regularly performed at PIMS, the complexity of this case makes it a significant achievement for the entire medical team.

Team Effort Behind Success

The operation and treatment involved key contributions from Dr. Vivek Parashar and Dr. Rahul Khatri from the paediatric department. The anaesthesia team, including Dr. Pinu, Dr. Sakshi, and Dr. Kamlesh Kanwar, also played a crucial role. Nursing staff members Reshma, Arun, Ashok, Rahul, Shiv, and Deepak provided essential support throughout the procedure.

Free Treatment Under Government Scheme

PIMS Chairman Ashish Agrawal congratulated the team on this achievement. He stated that the entire treatment was provided free of cost under the government’s Janani Suraksha Yojana.

He further emphasised that PIMS Umarda is equipped with modern and advanced medical facilities and continues to contribute significantly to healthcare services in the Udaipur division.
