Anthropic’s IPO Plans Face Challenges Amid Tech Partner Struggles
Anthropic's IPO plans have become more complex as market doubts grow following disappointing results from major partners like Microsoft and Google.

NEW DELHI, Nov 1: Anthropic’s plans for an initial public offering face hurdles as major partners, including Microsoft, Google, and Amazon, reported disappointing quarterly results, leading to increased investor skepticism.
Daniel Newman, CEO at Futurum Group, noted that the quarter’s results have raised concerns about the AI market’s capital structures. He said, “Everybody’s still full steam ahead on AI, but all the things around it took an interesting turn this week.”
Despite a projected record-setting IPO, Anthropic disclosed an $80 billion net loss for the first half of the year in its prospectus. The company outlined significant compute commitments and cited numerous risk factors, leaving investors apprehensive about its financial health ahead of the anticipated third-quarter earnings report.
Investor worries are compounded by the financial struggles of companies in the AI cloud space, including CoreWeave and Nebius, grappling with higher borrowing costs. Anthropic relies on these neoclouds and larger firms like Amazon and Google for its computational needs. David Hsu, a professor at the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School, echoed concerns about the profitability of AI technology, questioning how it would translate into viable business models.
The Nasdaq Composite has seen its first three-week losing streak since March, driven by a 2.9% drop influenced by weakened forecasts from Intel, affecting the semiconductor sector crucial for AI infrastructure.
In their earnings calls, major tech companies expressed caution. Microsoft cut its capital expenditure forecast to $170 billion, while Amazon and Alphabet provided forecasts that missed analysts’ expectations. Amazon reported a negative free cash flow of $42.4 billion over the trailing 12 months.
Newman indicated that the funding situation is precarious: “Suddenly, they’re like, ‘We can’t keep funding this on free cash flow.'” He added that the risk of companies being unable to self-fund their AI infrastructure has become a significant concern.
As Anthropic approaches its IPO, its partners—also primary investors—could become a focal point. The upcoming roadshow is expected to address financial dynamics and investor apprehensions.
The overall IPO market is struggling, with several companies postponing or abandoning plans due to unfavorable conditions. Anthropic’s ability to attract investment will depend on how much risk investors are willing to take at this time.
Newman described the anticipation surrounding Anthropic’s potential, stating, “The FOMO — fear of missing out — on a potentially generational company is real.” He praised the company’s impressive growth indicators, noting a 1,300% annual sales growth and a 900% net revenue retention rate.
