Seoul, May 31: A massive panic unfolded on Seoul Metro Line 5 on Saturday morning after a fire broke out inside a moving subway train, forcing nearly 400 passengers to evacuate through the tunnel to safety. The terrifying incident occurred between Yeouinaru and Mapo stations in western Seoul.

Authorities confirmed the arrest of a 60-year-old man, suspected of intentionally setting the fire inside the train using gasoline and a torch lighter. The suspect was apprehended near Yeouinaru station at approximately 9:45 AM.
Passengers Flee Through Tunnel in Chaos
The fire erupted suddenly, causing flames and thick smoke to engulf parts of the train. The Seoul Metropolitan Police and emergency response teams coordinated a mass evacuation of passengers, many of whom were seen running through the subway tunnel to escape.
Officials said that while no major injuries were reported, at least 21 passengers were taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation and minor injuries such as scratches sustained during the evacuation.
Fire Extinguished, Service Resumes
The fire was fully extinguished by 10:24 AM, and according to Seoul Metro authorities, services on Line 5 were temporarily suspended but have now resumed normal operations.
The motive behind the attack remains under investigation. Officials at Yeongdeungpo Police Station are questioning the suspect to determine the reason behind the act of arson.
A Wake-Up Call for Public Safety
This incident has raised fresh concerns over public transportation safety in South Korea. While Seoul’s metro system is known for its efficiency and security, Saturday’s fire has prompted calls for stricter surveillance and emergency response drills on public transit systems.
