According to the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), the new regulations for FASTags, the electronic toll collection system, will come into effect from August 1, 2024. These changes are aimed at increasing the efficiency and security of the system and will affect millions of FASTag users across India.
FASTag rules and deadlines
The key deadline for these new rules is October 31, 2024. By this date, all FASTags issued three to five years ago will have to go through the updated Know Your Customer (KYC) procedures. Additionally, FASTags that are more than 5 years old should be replaced completely.
Starting August 1, all festive tags must be linked to the vehicle’s license plate and VIN, and new car owners must update their license plate within 90 days of purchase.
Additional measures for FASTag providers
FASTag providers are now required to implement several additional measures. Check and update the database with detailed vehicle information, upload clear photos of the front and side of the vehicle for easy identification, and ensure that each FASTag is linked to a mobile phone number for better communication.
Impact on FASTag users
The new rules will have a big impact on FASTag users, especially those who drive older or FASTag vehicles. Failure to comply with these regulations may result in toll inconvenience and service disruption. Vehicle owners are advised to act quickly to avoid confusion.
Instructions for car owners
Vehicle owners must take several steps to ensure compliance.
1. Check FASTag issue date.
2. If your tag is 3-5 years old, complete your KYC update by October 31st.
3. Replace labels older than 5 years.
4. Make sure the FASTag is linked to the registration number and VIN of your vehicle.
5. New vehicle owners must update their registration information within 90 days.
As the deadline approaches, FASTAG service providers are expected to communicate with their customers for any necessary updates. In the meantime, vehicle owners are encouraged to ensure they meet these new requirements for uninterrupted toll service.
