Apple is preparing to launch its highly anticipated iPad Pro and iPad Air models in the second week of May, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Garman. Originally scheduled for a late March or early April release, the release was delayed due to software updates and manufacturing issues related to the new OLED displays on the iPad Pro models.
Garman points out in his latest newsletter that the new iPad Pro and Air models could hit the market on May 6th. There are no events planned for the new iPad. Instead, Apple will likely opt for a press release on the Apple Newsroom website, similar to the recent announcement of the 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Air models with the M3 chip.
Garmin reported that Apple’s suppliers have ramped up production of the new devices, suggesting that the launch is imminent. The company is in the final stages of a software update for the new iPad and has big plans.
iPad Pro, iPad Air: What to Expect?
The new iPad Pro models will feature a powerful M3 chip, an OLED display, a thinner body, a redesigned rear camera bump and possibly MagSafe wireless charging. The transition to OLED displays is difficult and leads to delays in market launch. Ross Young, an analyst at Display Supply Chain Consultants, said Samsung and LG will be the sole suppliers of OLED displays for the 12.9-inch iPad Pro.
It splits orders for the 11.1-inch model, diversifying Apple’s supply chain to ensure a steady flow of parts.
In addition to the iPad Pro, Apple plans to release two new iPad Air models, including the first larger 12.9-inch version of the iPad Air series. These models feature the M2 chip and a horizontal front camera, similar to the later iPad Pro models.
Along with the new iPad, Apple is expected to unveil a new Magic Keyboard for the iPad Pro, which will feature a larger screen, a semi-aluminum body and other design changes. A new Apple Pencil is also being developed to complement the new iPad range and improve the user experience.
The price of the iPad Pro could rise
However, due to the more expensive OLED display technology, a price increase for the new iPad Pro models is to be expected.
Early rumors suggested the 12.9-inch iPad Pro could sell for nearly $2,000, but more recent reports put the starting price at around $1,500. The new 12.9-inch iPad Air with M2 processor and traditional display is said to offer a cheaper option compared to the Pro model.
