NASA’s ambitious Mars Sample Return (MSR) mission, aimed at bringing Martian rock and soil samples back to Earth, may avoid cancellation thanks to a cost-effective proposal from Lockheed Martin. Originally projected to cost up to $11 billion, the MSR mission has been under threat of cancellation by 2026 due to budget constraints. But Lockheed’s latest proposal could breathe new life into the mission.

Lockheed Martin’s InSight-Inspired Lander Design
In a bold effort to salvage the mission, Lockheed Martin — the aerospace firm behind 11 of NASA’s 22 Mars spacecraft — has presented a new concept that repurposes the design of NASA’s InSight lander, which successfully touched down on Mars in 2018. This new lander would be smaller, simpler, and more affordable.
Lockheed claims its streamlined MSR mission could be executed for under $3 billion, using proven technology and a commercial, risk-managed approach. By leveraging existing hardware and limiting program oversight, the mission could stay well below the originally feared $11 billion cost ceiling.
The proposal aims to reduce complexity, speed up delivery timelines, and enable the return of critical Martian samples collected by NASA’s Perseverance rover, which has been exploring the Red Planet since 2021.
Rocket Lab Joins the Race
Lockheed Martin isn’t alone in the race to rescue the MSR campaign. In 2024, Rocket Lab, a private space company, also submitted a low-cost proposal to NASA. Their approach similarly promises faster and cheaper sample return capabilities, aligning with NASA’s push to keep costs manageable while still achieving core science goals.
A Shift Toward Human Exploration
As the debate continues over MSR funding, there are growing signs that NASA’s Mars focus may be shifting. Under past administration proposals, including those from the Trump era, there is interest in putting astronauts on Mars. While sending humans to the Red Planet is far more complex than robotic missions, it would allow for the direct collection and return of invaluable samples of Martian rock, dust, and atmosphere.
For now, NASA faces a critical decision: scale back, cancel, or approve a reimagined Mars Sample Return. The outcome will shape the future of Martian exploration — and possibly the timeline for sending humans to Mars.
