NEW DELHI, March 25, 2025: The Government of India has announced a 24% increase in the monthly salary of Members of Parliament (MPs). The Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs issued a notification on Monday confirming the hike, which raises MPs’ monthly pay from ₹1 lakh to ₹1.24 lakh, effective retroactively from April 1, 2023.
The revision has been made in accordance with the Cost Inflation Index (CII) under the Income Tax Act, 1961, as per the Members of Parliament Salary, Allowances and Pension Act.

Pension and Allowances Also Increased
In addition to the salary hike:

Daily allowance has been raised from ₹2,000 to ₹2,500.

Pension for former MPs has been increased from ₹25,000 to ₹31,000 per month.

Extra pension for MPs with over five years of tenure is now ₹2,500 per month (up from ₹2,000) for each additional year served.

2018 Reforms & Automatic Revision Policy
The last significant increase came in 2018, when then Finance Minister Arun Jaitley doubled MPs’ salaries from ₹50,000 to ₹1 lakh per month. He also introduced a mechanism for automatic revisions every five years, linked to inflation indices—eliminating the need for repeated parliamentary recommendations.
During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, MPs and ministers took a 30% salary cut for a year.
