Prior to this, MP Rawat, along with other committee members, toured the Gevra coal mine—renowned as the world’s second-largest coal mine—and the Bhilai Steel Plant to gain insights into their operations.

The Parliamentary Standing Committee is currently on an official visit to Chhattisgarh, focusing on various developmental and policy issues. During his interaction with Deputy CM Sharma, MP Rawat deliberated on key aspects related to tribal development programs, constitutional rights, and the implementation of the Panchayats (Extension to Scheduled Areas) Act (PESA). He also shared Rajasthan’s experiences in these domains.
The discussions emphasized leveraging gubernatorial powers under the Fifth Schedule to enhance the implementation of the PESA Act in the ten states covered under it. Proposals regarding new legislative measures and cultural and developmental plans were also tabled, with a view to benefiting tribal regions across India, including Rajasthan.
Exploring the Gevra Coal Mine
Ahead of the meeting, MP Rawat and the committee visited the Gevra coal mine in Korba. Recognized as the world’s second-largest coal mine, the site presented a unique learning opportunity for the members. The delegation observed mining activities from a strategic viewpoint and was briefed via a film and presentations by the Gevra team. These highlighted the operational protocols, safety measures, eco-friendly practices, and environmental conservation efforts undertaken by the mine.
The committee members also engaged in informal discussions with representatives from the Coal Ministry, Coal India Limited, and South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL) regarding safety measures in coal mines. Senior officials from SECL and Coal India participated actively in the discussions.

As part of the official tour, MP Rawat also visited the Bhilai Steel Plant, a critical contributor to India’s infrastructure and railway development. During the visit, he reviewed the progress of Greenfield and Brownfield projects and praised the plant’s advanced technology and commitment to environmental sustainability.
