Minor tribal couple found hanging after denied marriage due to same gotra

Udaipur : A minor tribal couple allegedly committed suicide on Thursday morning  by hanging themselves from the same noose in Dungarpur’s Sadar police station area limits.

They appeared to have taken this step after their families allegedly refused to let them marry, as they belonged to the same gotra (lineage),  the police said.  This happened in Asera Katara Fala village. Some people who had gone near the pond saw the couple hanging by the same noose from a neem tree. The boy was identified as Naresh Katara (17) and girl as Narbada (15) who were neighbours and lived in the same locality. People from nearby areas gathered in large numbers while police reached the spot and shifted the bodies to the mortuary at the district hospital.

“It seems to be a love affair. Both were minors and were in love with each other for quite some time. Primary investigation reveals their families  had refused to marry them off as they both belonged to the same gotra. Among tribals, people with the same gotra are not allowed to marry each other. We have lodged a case of unnatural deaths, though the reasons for the suicides would be investigated from other angles too” a police officer said.
