Udaipur : Local producers and cinema lovers are striving hard to get a Film City in Udaipur. The demand have been pending for over a decade now with local producers, artists, legislators and members of parliament having urged time and again to the state and central government. Arjunlal Meema, Udaipur MP had also promised to make efforts to get a Film city if he was revoted into power. Presently, a requirement of 300 bhiga land for the project is proving a major hurdle.
In a letter to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the district authorities Mukeshji Madhwani, chairperson of All Rajasthani Film Samiti has demanded to grant land outside the city periphery where, vast un-utilized land is available. The Samiti has written to Modi urging him to provide land at reserved price for developing the film city which would have all amenities including hi-tech studio, artificial sets and processing facilities. Sources claim, investors are ready to pool in 1000 crore rupees to execute the ambitious project and do not even require the state aid for its fulfilment. Udaipur has over 100 locations within 15-20 km, and this makes the city suitable for having Film City. Udaipur offers peaceful atmosphere ideal for film shoots. Its air, road and rail connectivity to Mumbai also makes it conducive for the project.
Experts stress here is a tremendous untapped potential as a Film City to cater to the Bollywood, Hollywood and South Indian film industry. Over 150 hindi films including classics and mega hits like Guide, Mera Gao-Mera Desh, Mera Saya, Khuda Gavah, Jeet, Fiza, Yaadein, EkLavya, Prem Ratan Dhan Payo, Ram Leela, Yeh Jawani Hai Diwani, Rajput, Khuddar, Phool Baney Angarey, Sajna Saath Nibhana etc have been shot here and above 350 ad films, serials, documentaries, Rajasthani, Tamil and Tollywood movies have been shot in the picturesque locations of Udaipur and surrounding areas.
“Udaipur has everything from palaces, to lakes, hills, gardens, heritage buildings, forts, luxury hotels that are favorite shooting spots for directors and producers. We have unmatched natural ambience, historical monuments, distinct culture which are the basic requirements for a film city” says Madhwani who have been campaigning for the cause since 2007. ” If we get a full-fleged film city here, it would boost Udaipur tourism and economy by creating huge employment opportunity and also bring the city on national and global map as a preferred filming destination”says Anil Mehta, another producer.
Film City has been the long-standing demand of local artists, cameramen, directors too. Udaipur has contributed immensely to the growth of Bollywood film and Television industry for many decades now. For that reason many Hollywood movies like Octopussy, Marigold, The Darjeeling Ltd, Heat and Dust, The Fall, The Cheetah Girls etc have been shot here.
