According to a Reuters report, OpenAI could unveil an artificial intelligence (AI)-based search product next week. The new agency report quotes two sources familiar with the matter who asked not to be named.
Publications such as Bloomberg and The Information have previously reported that Microsoft-backed OpenAI is working on a search product to compete with search giant Google, and the release date of this product was reported for the first time.

Google has announced that it will hold its annual I/O conference on May 14 this year. If OpenAI announces an AI-powered search product on May 13, it will likely be announced a day before the event.
OpenAI is reportedly “poaching” Google’s search staff
A Bloomberg report earlier this week suggested that OpenAI is heavily recruiting Google employees to work on its search team to bolster efforts to build this new search platform. The Verge also reported, citing another source, that OpenAI is trying to involve Google employees in its search project.
The exact number of employees successfully recruited is not known. Industry experts have been calling for this for a long time.
ChatGPT is an alternative method of gathering information online, but AI chatbots have long struggled to provide accurate and real-time information from the internet. The OpenAI search product will be an extension of the company’s flagship ChatGPT product. According to a Bloomberg report, OpenAI’s search product allows ChatGPT to extract information directly from the web and include citations.
The former OpenAI researcher also founded the $1 billion startup Perplexity. AI makes Perplexity exciting by providing a native AI search interface that displays citations in results and images, not just text in answers. According to the company’s January blog post, it has 10 million monthly active users.
The launch of OpenAI’s search product could also result in Perplexity’s artificial intelligence becoming obsolete, especially given that Microsoft recently banned its use for employees due to security concerns.
