Ranchi, May 13: The Jharkhand BJP has declared a statewide protest against the Hemant Soren government concerning farmers’ issues. BJP state president Aditya Sahu announced that party workers will hold one-day demonstrations at all block headquarters in Jharkhand from May 15 to May 20.
Sahu criticized the Hemant government as being anti-farmer, stating that it has failed to fulfill promises made before the elections. He highlighted that the JMM and Congress had made enticing promises in their manifesto, such as providing a minimum support price of ₹3200 per quintal for farmers, free electricity for agricultural work, and affordable fertilizers and seeds. However, he claimed that the government has forgotten these commitments after coming to power.
He raised concerns about the black marketing of fertilizers, alleging that urea is being sold at double the prescribed rate, and even the salt under the Public Distribution System (PDS) is subject to black marketing. Sahu pointed out that the current government’s actions, such as discontinuing the ‘Mukhyamantri Krishi Aashirwad Yojana’ initiated by the previous BJP government and creating obstacles in the Prime Minister’s Crop Insurance Scheme, reflect its anti-farmer mentality.
Additionally, he expressed deep concern over the recent unseasonal rains and heavy hailstorms that have caused significant damage to farmers. Sahu noted that crops like watermelon, cucumber, and other vegetables have been completely destroyed in several districts, including Ranchi, leaving farmers devastated.
He urged the state government to conduct an immediate survey to assess the damage accurately and provide adequate compensation to affected farmers. Sahu emphasized that many farmers take loans or mortgage their jewelry to farm, and the hailstorm has crushed their hopes. He also appealed for immediate relief for the homes of the poor that have been damaged, to protect affected families before the onset of the monsoon.
