India Strengthens Naval Power as Navy to Induct Anti-Submarine Vessel ‘Mahe’

New Delhi, 24 November (Udaipur Kiran)। The Indian Navy will induct the first vessel of the Mahe-class Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC) on Monday at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai. The ceremony, organised by the Western Naval Command under Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan, will be presided over by Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi.

Mahe

The commissioning of INS Mahe marks the arrival of a new generation of indigenous shallow-water combat vessels—sleek, fast and fully Indian. Built with over 80% indigenous content, the Mahe-class warship reflects India’s growing capability in ship design, construction and system integration. Designed to operate as a “silent hunter” on the western seaboard, Mahe symbolises India’s commitment to self-reliance and maritime security.

Constructed by Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), Mahe is a state-of-the-art example of India’s indigenous shipbuilding drive. Though compact, the vessel embodies agility, precision and endurance—qualities essential for dominance in coastal operations.

With its blend of firepower, manoeuvrability and high responsiveness, Mahe is designed for submarine detection, coastal patrols and securing critical sea lanes. Named after the historic coastal town of Mahe on the Malabar coast, the vessel carries the emblem of the traditional ‘Urumi’ at its crest.

Commanding Officer A.C. Chaubey said, “This is the first Shallow Water Craft built and designed by Cochin Shipyard Limited. The ship is equipped with fully indigenous weapons and sensors, including a Naval Surface Gun, indigenous rocket launcher, torpedoes, decoys and a stabilised remote-control gun. The sensors include a sonar system and LFVDS.”

Lieutenant Commander Pransh Sharma added, “Mahe is the first vessel of its class built by CSL and contains 80% indigenous parts. The weapon and sensor suite features the Naval Surface Gun (NSG) for neutralising threats in the surface and aerial domain. The Larsen & Toubro system assists in neutralising enemy submarines and torpedoes fired by them.”
