Ministry of Commerce and Industry’s Announcement
The Ministry of Commerce and Industry announced on Thursday that the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) has successfully exported 8.7 tons of high-quality MD2 variety pineapples to the UAE. The MD2 variety, also known as ‘Golden Ripe’ or ‘Super Sweet,’ is renowned for its exceptional sweetness and quality. This variety is cultivated in the Sindhudurg district of the Konkan region in Maharashtra.
A Milestone in India’s Agricultural Export History
The ministry highlighted that this is a significant moment in India’s agricultural export history, demonstrating the country’s ability to produce and supply high-quality pineapples to global markets. Del Monte developed the MD2 variety selectively in the 1980s, and it has since become the gold standard in the pineapple industry, with substantial cultivation in countries like Costa Rica, the Philippines, and Thailand.
