Hindustan Zinc Launches Rajasthan’s First EV Bus Fleet in Udaipur

Udaipur, April 20, 2026 (Udaipur Kiran): Hindustan Zinc Limited has launched Rajasthan’s first and largest electric bus fleet at its Debari zinc smelter plant in Udaipur, marking a significant step towards green mobility.

First EV Bus Fleet

A total of 41 electric buses have been flagged off from the Debari plant in partnership with Enviro Wheels Mobility Private Limited. The initiative aims to reduce pollution caused by employee transportation by replacing diesel buses with electric ones.

The company estimates that this transition will help cut over 11,000 tonnes of carbon emissions during the contract period, contributing to a reduction in Scope 3 emissions.

CEO Arun Misra said the company is committed to balancing industrial growth with environmental responsibility. He added that the goal is to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 or earlier, and the introduction of electric buses is part of that long-term vision to build a cleaner and safer mining ecosystem.

He also highlighted that, in line with its membership of the International Council on Mining and Metals, the company is integrating climate responsibility into its daily operations.

Over the past few years, Hindustan Zinc has undertaken a comprehensive programme to improve energy efficiency, reduce its carbon footprint, and accelerate the shift to clean energy. The share of renewable energy in its total energy mix has increased to around 18 percent, reflecting steady progress toward decarbonisation goals.

A key milestone includes a 530 MW round-the-clock renewable energy agreement, expected to meet over 70 percent of the company’s total energy requirement. The first phase of renewable energy supply has already commenced in the previous financial year.

Recognising its sustainability efforts, Hindustan Zinc has been ranked as the world’s most sustainable metals and mining company for the third consecutive year in the S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment 2025.

The initiative is expected to boost the adoption of electric vehicles in Rajasthan and encourage greater environmental responsibility within the industrial sector.
