Lohardaga, March 21 – Continuous heavy rain and hailstorms have wreaked havoc across Lohardaga district, leaving local farmers in distress as their standing crops and vegetables suffered severe damage. Accompanied by strong winds, the extreme weather conditions also led to the falling of trees and destruction of kutcha houses in several villages.

Rabi Crops, Vegetables Destroyed Amid Sudden Weather Shift
According to local farmers, the intense hailstorm and downpour have destroyed large swathes of vegetable crops, including tomatoes, brinjals, French beans, and cucumbers. The damage extended to pulses, oilseeds, and Rabi crops, which were at the harvesting stage. The hail also knocked off mango blossoms and early fruits, raising concerns for the upcoming mango season.
Residents reported that kutcha houses and tiled-roof homes were damaged in many villages due to uprooted trees and collapsing structures. The worst-hit areas were across all panchayats of the block region, where the majority of the farming community relies on seasonal produce for their livelihood.
District Officials Assess Damage on Ground
District Agriculture Officer Salen Khalkho and Circle Officer Modassar Nazar Mansoori visited the affected areas to conduct a preliminary survey of the losses. Officials spoke to farmers, inspected damaged fields, and assured that a detailed report would be prepared for compensation and government relief under disaster assistance norms.
Farmers have urged the state government to provide immediate financial aid and input subsidies to recover from this unseasonal weather blow, as many are now staring at economic hardship due to the loss of investment in seeds, fertilizers, and irrigation.
Urgent Need for Relief Measures
The district administration is expected to submit a damage report to higher authorities soon. Meanwhile, local authorities have advised farmers to stay alert for further weather updates and to document the crop losses for quicker claim processing.
As climate variability increases, such unpredictable hailstorms during the critical crop stage continue to raise alarms about the urgent need for better weather-resilient infrastructure and insurance coverage in rural India.
