New Delhi, August 14: Canadian batting all-rounder Harsh Thakkar has been fined 30 percent of his match fee for expressing disagreement with an umpire’s decision during the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup League 2 match against Scotland on Friday.
Thakkar was found to have violated Article 2.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which pertains to “disputing an umpire’s decision during an international match.” Additionally, two demerit points have been added to the official disciplinary record of the Canadian player, marking his first offence within a 24-month period.
The incident occurred at the end of the 26th over when Thakkar showed visible frustration after his LBW appeal was rejected by the on-field umpire. He reacted by waving his hands and shaking his head. Following this, when receiving his cap back from the umpire, Thakkar gestured towards his coaching staff outside the field, indicating that he believed the batsman was out.
Thakkar accepted the offence and agreed to the penalty proposed by match referee Graham McCree, which eliminated the need for a formal hearing. The charges were officially laid by on-field umpires Ghazi Sohail and Ian MacDonald, along with reserve umpire David McLean. Scotland performed excellently in the match, scoring 347 runs for the loss of 7 wickets in 50 overs, while Canada was bowled out for just 177 runs. Scotland’s bowler Lyle Robertson delivered a remarkable performance, taking 6 wickets for 52 runs in 10 overs.
For a Level 1 violation, the minimum penalty is an official reprimand, with a maximum fine of 50 percent of the player’s match fee and the addition of one or two demerit points to their record. If a player accumulates four or more demerit points within 24 months, they face suspension points, which can lead to a ban from one Test, two ODIs, or two T20 International matches.
