Villupuram, August 13: The Unjal Festival was celebrated with great fervor at the Melmalayanur Angalamma Temple in Villupuram district, Tamil Nadu, on the occasion of Aadi Amavasai. Millions of devotees from various districts of Tamil Nadu, as well as neighboring states like Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, flocked to Melmalayanur for the darshan of the goddess.
Early Wednesday morning, around 4 AM, special abhishekam and maha aradhana were performed for the main deity, Devi Angalamma. Following this, the goddess was adorned with a golden armor (thanga kavasam) and special deepa aradhana was conducted. Devotees had been waiting in long lines since morning to have a glimpse of the goddess.
For the main event of the festival, the Unjal Festival, the goddess Angalamma arrived at the swing pavilion in a special adornment around 11 PM. The temple priests and thousands of gathered devotees sang devotional songs and lullabies in praise of the goddess. Subsequently, around midnight, a grand deepa aradhana was performed, marking the grand conclusion of the Unjal Festival. During the deepa aradhana, devotees chanted the name of ‘Devi Angalamma’ while seeking her blessings.
Due to Aadi Amavasai, a large number of devotees from various districts of Tamil Nadu, including Puducherry, Chennai, Tiruvannamalai, Vellore, Cuddalore, and Kallakurichi, participated in the celebrations.
N. Anand, the state’s Minister for Rural Development and Water Resources, also took part in the renowned Unjal Festival at the Angalamma Temple on this auspicious occasion. He stood among the devotees, swinging the cradle of the goddess and offering prayers.
To facilitate the devotees, special buses were operated from various cities. The arrangements for the festival were made collaboratively by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department and the temple trustee committee officials.
