New Delhi, July 18: Former Australia head coach Darren Lehmann has expressed his support for Justin Langer as the next head coach of the England men’s Test team. Lehmann stated that he has not been contacted regarding the position.
Coaching Northamptonshire in the English county circuit, Lehmann mentioned, “I am very happy coaching Northants. I have not been approached for the England Test head coach role. I am sure there will be many applications for this position. It is also possible that the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) already has a replacement lined up.”
While endorsing Langer for the England Test head coach position, Lehmann noted that if Langer is willing, he would indeed make a great coach. “Whoever takes this role will have some very talented players. I see some good players in the county system,” he added.
Lehmann also pointed out that if Langer were to take on this role, he might face scheduling conflicts, as he is currently the head coach of the Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL and the Manchester Super Giants in The Hundred. Taking on the top job would mean he would have to step away from his franchise T20 coaching responsibilities.
The position of head coach for the England Test team has been vacant since Brendan McCullum’s resignation. Andy Flower has ruled out any possibility of accepting the role due to his commitments with Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the IPL and London Spirit in The Hundred. Following Flower’s refusal, Langer’s name has emerged prominently for the England Test head coach position.
Justin Langer was a specialist Test batsman for Australia, known for his effective opening partnership with Matthew Hayden in Test cricket. He scored 7,696 runs in 82 innings across 105 Tests, including 23 centuries and 30 half-centuries. After retiring, Langer has remained active in coaching, leading Australia to its only T20 World Cup victory under his guidance.
