ChatGPT Gets New Accessibility Feature, Can Now Read Its Responses Aloud to Users

ChatGPT has added new accessibility features to help visually impaired people. Artificial intelligence (AI)-based chatbot OpenAI on Monday announced its Read Aloud feature, allowing users to read out written answers. This new feature is different from the voice chat feature introduced in September 2023 and leverages the diverse capabilities of the AI model. Notably, a previous report also revealed that the Android app version of the chatbot could soon feature a home screen widget.

The new feature was announced via a post from the official OpenAI account on X (formerly Twitter). “ChatGPT can now read your replies. On iOS or Android, touch and hold a message, then tap Read.” Now available on the web – click the Read button below the message. A video demonstrating this feature is also attached.

Read Aloud is available on ChatGPT’s Android and iOS apps, as well as the web client. This feature has been added to both ChatGPT 4.0, which supports the ChatGPT Plus version, and ChatGPT 3.5, which can be accessed for free. This feature allows answers to be read in 37 different languages. However, to respond, it automatically detects the language of the generated text. Therefore, if the answer is written in English, the oral answer will also be in English.

Although it is similar to the voice chat feature, it is a different use case than the text-to-speech feature. With voice chat, users can only speak and hear responses; You won’t be able to see the text until the conversation ends. In contrast, with this feature, the communication mode is text only and users can select the messages they want to hear. This is used when the user is too busy to look at the screen to read a long answer, or when they are visually impaired and cannot read at a particular moment.

OpenAI seems to be working on several new features. Previous reports claimed that the chatbot Android app could soon get home screen widgets. This widget has shortcuts to send a text message, upload or send an image, make a voice request, or start a voice chat.
