Apple’s first foldable smartphone, the iPhone Duo, became available globally today with a price tag of approximately $2,000. The launch day saw considerable demand, resulting in early delivery delays but less of the typical fanfare associated with new iPhone releases.

In cities like Sydney, London, and San Francisco, customers lined up to purchase the device. Brian McClure from Austin was the first to buy one at his local store. Apple stated that the response was “nothing short of extraordinary” as initial pre-orders sold out quickly and delivery dates extended to late January.

The high price did not deter some customers from securing their purchase. Simon Krishnan, an engineer, described the Duo as a luxury item, stating, “Life’s too short.” In China and other regions, the device was offered only to those who had pre-ordered online, reflecting strong interest in the product.

CEO John Ternus welcomed customers at the Austin store, engaging with them as they entered. At the Fifth Avenue store in New York, marketing head Greg Joswiak similarly greeted customers. Some fans camped outside the store as early as 4 a.m. to ensure they got a device.

Many buyers expressed loyalty to Apple’s brand. Liu Wei, a healthcare professional in Shanghai, noted, “I’ve used Apple products for many years and I have more trust in the brand.” However, early reviews have pointed out some limitations, including compromises in camera capabilities and the need for app adjustments for the new display size.

Tech commentators offered mixed reviews, praising the Duo’s design while noting its heft and functionality issues. Marques Brownlee mentioned that for typical users who mainly text and browse, it might not be ideal. In contrast, others found its dual functionality as a phone and tablet appealing, suggesting it could replace other devices in the long run.

Market analysts believe Apple’s entry into the foldable phone market could significantly change its dynamics. Francisco Jeronimo from IDC projected that Apple could dominate nearly half of the foldable market’s value by 2026. He remarked, “Apple has made a convincing case for this form factor.”

As the foldable phone trend grows, the iPhone Duo could play a significant role in widening its audience, provided Apple can manage production to meet demand.
