Vinesh Phogat has been disqualified from the Olympic competition. She was unable to maintain her weight and was disqualified. This has not only eliminated her from the final but also from the medal race. The Indian Olympic Association has made this information public.
According to sources within the association, Vinesh Phogat could not maintain the 50kg weight before the gold medal final on Wednesday morning. Vinesh is competing in this weight category at the Olympics.
Sources say that Vinesh’s weight was 100 grams over the prescribed standard. According to the competition rules, wrestlers are weighed before each match. Vinesh was found to be overweight. According to the competition rules, Vinesh will also not be eligible for the silver medal. After this, only the gold and bronze medals will be awarded in the 50kg category.
A formal announcement is expected from the Olympic Association by Wednesday evening. Earlier on Tuesday, Vinesh Phogat’s weight was according to the prescribed standard. However, this weight has to be maintained for each category before every match.
Vinesh tried to lose weight all night
Sources have revealed that Vinesh and her coach came to know about this on Tuesday night itself. After which she did not sleep at all and tried her best to bring her weight to the prescribed category. This included jogging, skipping, and cycling.
However, this proved to be insufficient. The Indian contingent had requested that Vinesh be given a little more time, but their request was not heard. Vinesh previously competed in the 53kg weight category. This is the first time she has competed in the 50kg category.
Vinesh was scheduled to face American wrestler Sara Ann Hildebrandt in the gold medal match around 10 pm on Wednesday.
