Washington, February 23: Following a significant crackdown on the major drug cartel leader El Mencho in Mexico, violence erupted in several regions of the country. The White House claimed on Sunday that the United States provided intelligence support to the Mexican government for this major operation. Thanks to American assistance, Nemesio ‘El Mencho’ Oseguera Cervantes, the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), was killed.
White House spokesperson Caroline Levitt stated on the social media platform X, “The United States provided intelligence support to the Mexican government for an operation in Tepalcatepec, Jalisco, Mexico, which resulted in the elimination of Nemesio ‘El Mencho’ Oseguera Cervantes, a notorious drug lord and leader of the CJNG.”
Levitt noted that ‘El Mencho’ was a top target for both Mexico and the United States, as he was one of the leading traffickers of fentanyl in the U.S. She mentioned that President Donald Trump had designated the CJNG as a foreign terrorist organization last year.
In this operation, three other cartel members were killed, three were injured, and two were arrested. Levitt also praised the Mexican military for their cooperation and successful completion of the operation. Previously, U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau welcomed the operation, stating it was a significant development for Mexico, the United States, and the rest of Latin America. Landau has previously served as the U.S. ambassador to Mexico.
Following the assassination of the CJNG leader, widespread violence was reported across the country. Roads were blocked in several states, vehicles were set ablaze, and armed clashes occurred in areas including Tamaulipas, Michoacán, and Nayarit, where the CJNG is active.
In response to the violence, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum appealed for peace, stating, “There is complete coordination with all state governments. We must stay informed and remain calm.”
