San Francisco, February 17: A shooting at an ice arena in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, has resulted in the deaths of three individuals, including the shooter, who reportedly took his own life after the incident. Three others are in critical condition following the attack.
The incident occurred at the Denis M. Lynch Arena, where a hockey event involving several school students was taking place. At the time, a large number of students and their parents were present, leading to chaos in the arena.
According to initial investigations by police, it appears that the shooter may have targeted family members. Among the deceased is a young girl. The three injured individuals are currently receiving treatment in a hospital.
Pawtucket Police Chief Tina Goncalves stated in a press conference that law enforcement arrived promptly at the scene and cordoned off the area. All schools involved in the event have confirmed that their students are safe, and arrangements are being made for family reunification.
Pawtucket, located just north of Providence and near the Massachusetts state line, is home to approximately 75,000 residents, making it the fourth-largest city in Rhode Island.
Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee expressed his condolences on social media, stating that the Rhode Island State Police are working alongside local police in response to the incident. “I pray for all those affected by this tragedy,” he said.
Following the shooting, roads surrounding the arena were closed, and a heavy police presence was established in the area, with helicopters monitoring the situation.
This incident comes just months after a shooting at Brown University, located only a few miles away from Pawtucket, where two students were killed and nine others injured in December.
