Kolkata, March 15: Just hours before the formal announcement of the assembly elections in West Bengal, the state government made significant changes to police personnel on Sunday. A senior official from the state government confirmed that 27 inspectors and in-charge officers from 12 police stations have been transferred.
Several inspectors from the Diamond Harbour police district have been reassigned, along with in-charge officers from various police stations under the Bidhannagar, Barrackpore, and Chandannagar police commissionerates. Additionally, multiple inspectors from the East Midnapore district have also been transferred.
The police department issued a notification regarding these changes shortly before the election schedule was announced. The transfer directive clearly states that the concerned officials must assume their new positions as soon as possible in various districts, including North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, Jalpaiguri, East Midnapore, West Midnapore, South Dinajpur, and Hooghly.
The main opposition party, BJP, has raised questions regarding these transfers. BJP leader Sajal Ghosh stated, “They have made these transfers in advance so that the election commission cannot later change these appointments. We have sensed this move from the beginning. However, it is not mentioned anywhere that the election commission is prohibited from transferring these officials later. Their professional history and work experience are under thorough scrutiny. If needed, the election commission will review these details.”
It is noteworthy that the state government had already made changes to the police force three weeks ago, during which four IPS officers were transferred.
