Mumbai, May 18: Former England captain Michael Vaughan has expressed concerns regarding the England and Wales Cricket Board’s (ECB) management of Jofra Archer’s availability, particularly as the team prepares for its home series against New Zealand. Vaughan questioned whether centrally contracted players should prioritize franchise commitments over Test cricket, especially with Archer currently participating in the IPL in India.
As England announces its squad for the first Test at Lord’s starting June 4, Archer has been excluded as the ECB carefully manages his return to red-ball cricket following a lengthy injury layoff. Despite being one of England’s top fast bowlers, he will not be part of the series opener.
Vaughan’s criticism is aimed at the broader system rather than Archer himself. He noted, “I’m sure he’ll be in the squad (for the second Test). It comes midway through June. I think we have a problem in English cricket at the moment because Jofra was obviously staying for the full IPL.” He highlighted a contract between the ECB and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) that allows players to remain in the IPL for its duration.
He further argued that international duty should take precedence over franchise commitments, stating, “If that’s the case, I have a problem with England’s contracts because Jofra has been looked after by them for a few years now on a very handsome contract.”
While acknowledging the appeal of franchise tournaments, Vaughan warned that Test cricket could be undermined if priorities are not clearly defined. He emphasized the need for clarity in scheduling agreements to avoid confusion for players and boards alike.
“If you’re playing for England in your Test match, players should be back home playing for England. That’s what your central contract says you should be doing,” Vaughan added.
He suggested that if England intends to allow full participation in the IPL, adjustments to the international calendar may be necessary. “If there is an agreement that the ECB have done with the BCCI, well, I think you’ve got to start your Test summer somewhere a little bit later then,” he said.
From a leadership perspective, Vaughan stressed the importance of having full-strength teams available for key matches. “If I was Rob Key, the director of cricket, or Brendon McCullum, the coach, I would want my best bowler playing in that first Test against New Zealand at Lord’s. Not here.”
Ultimately, Vaughan’s comments reflect a larger concern about the future of Test cricket. He expressed a desire to see the best players competing in the longest format of the game, emphasizing the importance of national representation.
In the IPL, Jofra Archer has been performing well, leading the Rajasthan Royals in wickets and making a significant impact in the league with 17 wickets in 12 matches at an economy rate of 9.09.
