Palwal, March 16: Sudden unseasonal rainfall accompanied by gusty winds late last night has triggered widespread concern among farmers in Palwal district, causing significant damage to standing crops. The unexpected showers varied from heavy downpours in certain areas to light drizzles elsewhere, leaving agricultural communities anxious about their crop yields.

Sudden Weather Shift Brings Rain, Cold Returns
The abrupt weather change was observed just before Holika Dahan festivities, with thunderstorms and heavy rains lashing several parts of the district. Streets were inundated, creating temporary disruptions for residents, who had to retrieve their winter clothes once again as temperatures dropped noticeably overnight.
Severe Impact on Rabi Crops
The timing of this rainfall has been particularly detrimental, as Rabi crops, including wheat, mustard, barley, and pulses, were nearing the final stages of harvest. Fields now lie waterlogged, significantly risking the quality and yield of these essential crops. The moisture from heavy rains threatens grain quality, potentially leading to lower market prices and substantial economic losses for farmers.
Local farmers, including Surendra and Subhash, have expressed deep distress over the damage. According to them, “We wait an entire year hoping for a good harvest, but strong winds and unexpected rains have destroyed months of effort. The crops were ready for harvesting, and now our hard work is wasted.”
Farmers Demand Immediate Crop Damage Assessment and Compensation
In the wake of these losses, farmers are demanding that district authorities conduct an immediate crop damage survey (Girdawari) to accurately assess their losses. They seek urgent compensation from the government to alleviate the economic setback. Farmers emphasize that the harvest was promising this year, but the untimely rainfall has left their livelihoods hanging by a thread.
Farmers across Palwal district remain hopeful that authorities will respond swiftly and sensitively, offering timely financial support and relief to mitigate their hardship.
