UN Chief Welcomes Russia-Ukraine Ceasefire and Prisoner Exchange

New Delhi, May 10: United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has welcomed the announced three-day ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, along with the proposed prisoner exchange.

Guterres expressed his support on X, stating, “I welcome the announcement of a ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia and the plan for a large-scale prisoner exchange. I appreciate the efforts of the United States in facilitating this agreement and fully support its implementation. I reiterate my appeal for an immediate, complete, unconditional, and lasting ceasefire to take the first step towards a just, sustainable, and comprehensive peace in accordance with the UN Charter and international law.”

Meanwhile, UN Secretary-General spokesperson Stephane Dujarric reiterated the call for an immediate, complete, unconditional, and lasting ceasefire to advance towards a fair, sustainable, and comprehensive peace.

On Friday, Russia and Ukraine agreed to implement a ceasefire from Saturday to Monday and to exchange “one thousand for one thousand” prisoners.

This announcement was made by U.S. President Donald Trump, who described the agreement as a significant step towards ending the long-standing conflict. In a statement, Trump said, “I am pleased to announce that there will be a three-day ceasefire in the war between Russia and Ukraine on May 9, 10, and 11.”

He noted that the ceasefire would coincide with Russia’s ‘Victory Day’ celebrations, emphasizing Ukraine’s significant role during World War II. Trump stated, “Victory Day is celebrated in Russia, but Ukraine also played a major part, making it important for them as well.”

According to Trump, all military actions between the two nations will be halted temporarily under this agreement, with fighting and attacks ceasing during this period. He also mentioned that both countries have agreed to release one thousand prisoners each.
