Udaipur : The Udaipur police on wednesday, arrested a civil engineer of the sub-contractor firm that was laying sewer lines in connection with four deaths in Manwa Kheda locality under Hiran Magri police limits. The accused Rajkamal son of Hakimchandra Maurya, resident of Sitapur in Lucknow was the civil engineer present at the site who had asked the workers to go down to clean the sewer chamber on the fateful day of August 28. Dismissing his bail plea, a local court held that the workers were sent down inside the chamber without been given mandatory protection gears which is a serious crime. The court sent him to jail.
“The man is a site engineer of the firm which has taken the sub-contract from the main firm which was awarded the sewer laying tender. He was at the site when the first workers got down inside the sewer manhole” a police officer said. During interrogation, the engineer told police that there were two other chambers adjoining to the main chamber.There was some blockage at the T-junction and the workers were sent to clear the block. They didnt have protective gears like mask, helmets, boots etc. “There was no sewer flow since the line was un-functional since two months and no one expected that the chamber would have gaseous formation” sources said. The four victims, KanSingh, Kailash Meena, Dharamchand Meena and Prahlad Meena were suffocated to death on August 28 while working for a sewer line laying task under the Smart City Project Ltd. An official enquiry is being done about the reasons, laxity and other issues that resulted in the deaths.
Meanwhile, volunteers from various organizations met ADM Naresh Bunkar and demanded an ex-gratia of 10 lakh rupees each to be paid to the aggrieved families of the four victims. Activists from Safai Karamchari Andolan, Aadiwasi Kranti Manch, Akhil Bhartiya Aadiwasi Mahasabha, Vaalmiki Yuva Manch and Rashtriya Muslim Morcha gave memorandums to the officer.
