Patna, June 9: U-18 hockey goalkeeper Sawan Kumar received a grand welcome at Patna Airport upon his return from Japan, where he represented India at the Asian Hockey Tournament and won a gold medal. The event was attended by Ravindra Shankaran, Director General of the Bihar State Sports Authority, and Sports Minister Shreyasi Singh.
Sawan’s family was present at the airport, showering him with flowers and garlands. Sports Minister Shreyasi Singh fed him sweets in celebration. Speaking to the media, Sawan expressed his joy, stating, “Winning the gold medal at the Asian Games is a matter of great happiness. There is significant development in the field of sports in Bihar.”
On this occasion, Ravindra Shankaran highlighted the remarkable progress Bihar is making in sports, crediting the state government for its support. He mentioned a recent meeting chaired by the Chief Minister, where discussions included not just cricket but all popular sports in Bihar, such as football, kabaddi, volleyball, and hockey.
He also noted that stadiums are being constructed at the block level as a pilot initiative, with plans to select 50 of them to be handed over to local athletes to promote sports.
Minister Shreyasi Singh praised Sawan Kumar, stating, “Today, Bihar’s pride Sawan Kumar has given every resident a reason to feel proud by being part of the gold medal team. Sports must continue to progress in this manner.”
During the event, Minister Singh also commended two cricketers from Bihar, expressing pride that they are part of the Indian cricket team. She highlighted Ishan Kishan’s impressive performance and Vaibhav Suryaanshi’s recognition in the IPL, indicating that Bihar is continuously advancing in the world of cricket.
